PALS: A Pet Sanctuary in Lincoln County
Story by Dave Zarro; photos by Linda Zarro

“Hi, I’m looking for a replacement doorknob for my home, and I need a salt block for my cattle. Oh, and can you tell me where I can find the dogs and cats?” All of those questions would have been just fine at Orcheln’s hardware store on Saturday, April 8. PALS, the Pets A-Lone Sancturary of Lincoln County, had dogs and cats available for adoption at the store that day.

Mark Bonney, one of the organizations’ 30 volunteers, was there with Keaton Scheitlin and Erika Mashek, to offer some of the dogs and cats for adoption. At the present time, the shelter has 18 cats and 10 dogs at its facility in Hawk Point. Two more animals are in temporary foster homes.

PALS is run by all volunteers. They receive no monetary assistance from any city, county, state or federal programs. They rely heavily on donations from caring individuals, the support of the local businesses, ssistance from veterinarians, and various fundraisers.

Cheryl Cope, the president of the organization, showed CountyMirror how the shelter works. When an animal is first brought to PALS, usually as a stray, they first check to see if there is any form of identification, either a collar with tags or a microchip, in order to reunite the pet with their family. Each animal is taken to the vet where it is checked for illness, wounds, worms, and it receives all vaccinations required. It is then spayed or neutered and microchipped before being placed for adoption. The cats have their own room, with areas to roam, climb and play. The dogs each have their own roomy kennel where they stay. They also have a large fenced yard for outside play time and exercise.

When a stray is found, an attempt is made to find the owner in case it is a lost pet. KWRE makes regular public service announcements to let listeners know about found pets.
