Fall Fun In Lincoln County
Story and photos by Linda Zarro |
Fall is in full swing, even though it’s hardly been cold enough for a light jacket! Winter is just around the corner with snow, ice, sleet, and freezing temperatures, so for the next few weeks, enjoy the most beautiful time of the year (in my opinion).
Our family has been living in Lincoln County for two years now and we don’t regret making it our home – we’re just beginning to tap the resources for fun activities around here. Last week we took our grandsons to Cuivre River State Park to hunt for a geocache. That was their first experience playing this “treasure hunt” game. (Read more about this activity at www.geocaching.com)

After a nice little hike along Frenchman’s Bluff, they discovered where the cache was hidden. The boys signed their names, and we were off to find another cache – this time at the Winfield Lock and Dam, first stopping for a quick find in the City of Winfield. The boys are hooked on geocaching, and now their daddy is, too. It’s an all-new way to discover Lincoln County (and surrounding areas) using a hand-held GPS (global positioning system).

This past weekend we drove up Hwy. 79 and found two caches in the Elsberry area, and then headed north to Louisiana. We’re meeting people, taking in the beautiful fall colors, and enjoying family time in the great outdoors. It’s so much fun to do treasure hunts that we even hid our granddaughter’s birthday present outside – she had fun using the GPS to find her “cash” hidden in a “cache.”
Other outdoor activities are hayrides, horseback riding, hiking, hunting…just to name a few. Why don’t you let us know what YOU do for fall activities in Lincoln County? Contact www.CountyMirror.com and tell us what you like to do for activities and maybe send a couple of photos. We want to get our fellow Lincoln Countians involved in this website developed FOR LINCOLN COUNTY!! It’s a great place to live. We’re just beginning to discover some of the hidden treasures in our area…like the Sandy Creek Natural Tunnel, but like I said in the last article I wrote, that’s another story…
We are blessed indeed!
